Make: Double-Rich Chocolate Cookies

I have as much interest in the Super Bowl as I do in wearing mom jeans, however the food is what I'm all about. We went over to my grams for her delicious Italian beef sandwiches and German chocolate cake, so I decided to bring these chocolate cookies in a festive football shape.

Start by getting your ingredients together- it really makes baking go by smoothly as opposed to running all around

Mix together your dry ingredients

Mix together your wet ingredients, then add your dry

I mix in the chocolate chips in by hand to prevent overmixing

Squeeze the cookie ends together to make a football shape, then frost on your cute little football stitches

Ta-Da! So fun, but these cookies can be made year round!

The original recipe is from Mrs. Fields Cookie Book- which is the only book I use when I bake, and the recipe is as follows:

2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 cup dark brown sugar (however I always use light brown!)
3/4 cup white sugar
1 cup salted butter (this time I used unsalted though- it doesn't make a HUGE difference)
3 large eggs
2 tsp. pure vanilla
2 cups semisweet chocolate chip (I always use Hersey's special dark chocolate)

Preheat oven at 300'
In a medium bowl combine flour, soda, salt, and cocoa powder well with a wire whisk and set aside.
In a large bow blend sugars with an electric mixer at medium speed. Add butter and beat to form a grainy paste. Scrape down sides of bowl, then add eggs and vanilla. Beat at medium speed until light and fluffy.
Add flour mixture and chocolate chips, and blend at low speed just until combined. Do not overmix.
Drop dough by rounded tablespoons onto ungreased cookie sheets, 1 1/2 inches apart. Bake for 21-23 minutes. Immediately transfer cookies with a spatula to a cool surface.

Last weekend Chelsea and I went out for a night on the town after shutting down Kensie (so sad) but we take any excuse to get dolled up and go dancing. While it's sad to see such an incredible business close, I'm thankful for how close we all became and I'm so glad it introduced Chelsea and I.

This dress was the last purchase I made at Kensie- and I'm so happy I did, it's a perfect going out dress. Despite how much I love dresses, I have a severe lack of "paint the town red" dresses- which is most likely due to my lack of "paint the town red" activities. Here is to new changes in the new year though!

This outfit is so unusual for me, primarily black, with army boots? Where is the full skirt? Where is the color? But with the grey skies ahead I'm really feeling this relaxed vibe.

How much do you love my necklace? This is the one I bought on Etsy from one of my fabulous mentors, Wendy Maves, who owned the first boutique I ever worked at and designs really incredible jewelry. In sad news though, we closed Kensie on the 25th and my last day with the company is tomorrow when we finish packing up and cleaning the store. I have to say that I LOVED every minute of working for such an incredible brand. The people were so driven and have such a clear focus of the brand image, I'll miss my job but I'm excited for where it's going to take me.

Another dressy post, yet again taken with no destination in mind. I just really love getting dressed up- so who cares if it's just to sit at home and work on my blog? At least I'm doing it glamorously.

These shoes were an absolute must have when they came in at work, at first glance you think "holy cow what would I ever wear those with" but honestly you could wear them with everything! We tried them on with blues, purples, reds, they might be one of my most versatile shoes.

And confession: I'm not wearing any makeup in these photos, which is why there aren't any close ups on my face- you're welcome.

I took these pictures last week on my day off, when Audrey and I took the opportunity to run around in the snow- she is such a midwestern dog! I picked this sweater up off the sale rack at work, and I love it for winter, everyone wears grey and black and this adds such a pop of color.

I discovered this dress this summer at the Elie Tahari outlet and fell in love- but let's be real, I have no where to wear it! So I walked away from it. Then, for the following months, thought this was the biggest mistake of my life. This dress makes my heart stop! So I called around and Googled but sadly found nothing.

Clearly this story has a happy ending, as I'm wearing it now. My mom won her mother of the year (and then some) award by finding it online at Rue La La, and giving it to me for Christmas- best gift ever!

Moral of the story though, don't walk away from an article of clothing if it makes your heart stop- regardless of practicality.

Cupcakes made with Oreos? I'm in- I'm not a huge fan of the cookie on it's own but in a cupcake it sounds incredibly delicious. I discovered this recipe on Pinterest, which led me to discover one of my favorite new blogs: Annie's eats.

Start by mixing your dry ingredients

Then mix in your wet ingredients and cookies

To bake these puppies up, place half an oreo on the bottom cream side up, then fill 1/2 full with finished cupcake mix.

Your finished cupcake will look like this delicious beast!

Wait for them to cool, and then frost with the delicious cream cheese frosting.

You are going to LOVE these cupcakes, not only do they look beautiful but they taste delicious!

Soon-to-be a Southern Belle

Well ya'll, it's official- I'm bound to be a southern belle! Now that I can tell all of you that the store I manage is closing, I've decided to take this job-less opportunity and move to Alabama with Ryan. I'm really excited for this new adventure in my life- and if anyone knows of some great shops in Huntsville let me know!

What's stressful though is how I'm going to pack all my clothes! This girl has a lot of stuff, so I'll definitely be using space bags, but I can't forget to pack these fantastic cowboy boots I got in Arizona last summer.

If you know me you know I'm really anti-fur, I think it's down right cruel, but let me get down from my soap box and tell you how much I love Faux fur. I had a faux leopard coat as a child and I think that's what initiated this obsession, I'm just so glad it's now in style to look outlandish.

I got this faux fur vest as a Christmas gift from my Aunt (thanks Beth!), and I've already worn it two days in a row- to much? probably.

A Look Back: 2011

January

2011 was a quiet month for me, Ryan moved to Albany, GA so while I was sad I was so proud that he was able to land such a great position right out of school. I relish this time though- it was my last real "break" for 2011- after this my life started moving at top speed!

February

So, I have no idea what happened in February. I have no Facebook pictures posted in this month and no blog posts- so I must have been living under a rock. One great thing that happened though is my sister and her fiance Dave got engaged- that was definitely a highlight this year.

March

I started my job search in March because I knew I wanted to have a job upon graduation, but my parents surprised me with a weekend trip to Florida to visit my grandparents. Ryan was able to come and he and I went to Universal Studios to see Harry Potter land- so awesome! And we went to Margaritaville, which is one of the happiest places on earth in my opinion.
(And Ryan and I do more than just drink cocktails- no matter what these two photos might say).

April

This was a big month for me, I started my new full time job and the days were jam packed. I worked as an assistant store manager and on my days off I had full days of school working on my business plan and portfolio. It was so exciting starting at Kensie, we opened the store so the position was so hands on unloading boxes, hiring, and merchandising- it really was a perfect first job for me. Also, Ryan and I went on a cruise to the Bahamas- which was awesome and we can't wait to go on another one!

May

While working and being in school I didn't have much time for a social life in May, however my friend Amanda and I took a break from the crunch time of school and went to Kate of Kie&Kate Couture's jewelry party. I know I talk about her jewelry a lot on my blog, but her pieces really are so fun.

June

In June I became a college graduate- with honors!! This meant so much to me, I've never been that interested in school, but I'm so passionate about working in the fashion industry that I really applied myself. I've learned so much in school and in my careers and graduating made me realize how lucky I am with the experiences I've had in my life.

July

Now that I was done with school I focused on frequent posts for my blog and working hard as Assistant Store manager, I was learning so much from the store manager that I really enjoyed going to work everyday.

August

What a fun month August was! I attended my first Chicago Blogger Meet up and met some truly inspiring women and got pumped to improve my blog. Ryan and I went with his family to Hilton Head, SC (it was my first time) and we had such a blast. I got to meet his mom's whole side of the family while enjoying sometime in the sun.

September

This was another month that I really buckled down on my blog, I was promoted at work to store manager but I wanted to stay connected to my readers and this creative outlet. I also won a local apple pie bake off with my sisters recipe (1st place best filling, 2nd place best overall pie- thank you very much). Finally I went to California with my family to visit my grandparents, aunt, uncle and cousins which was so much fun. We rented a beautiful home and the weather was just perfect, it couldn't have been a better trip.

October

October is always my favorite month and this year was no different! I visited Ryan in Albany, I turned 22, I offered advertising on my blog to donate to the Human Society, and I was featured on Refinery 29 twice! I also love the weather in October, it's chilly enough to wear sweaters but not super cold.

November

In November I loved spending time with family and friends, I visited Ryan in Champaign, went out with my coworkers for Sadie's birthday, and spent time with family. Isn't that what the holidays are all about? I think so.

December

Finally the wrap up of the year, again spent with family and friends and enjoying the unseasonably warm weather. Here is to another great year! LOTS of big changes are headed my way for 2012- I can feel it in the air!

Finally! It's snowing, well kind of- can you see a few random flakes in these pictures? I live in the midwest and yet there is no snow on the ground as I wake up this morning. Dear Mother Nature- it's December 12th!

So I picked up these boots at the Kensie outlet then I log in to Facebook and these ear muffs pop up in my news feed! I had to have them.

These ear muffs are from a locally owned shop in Naperville called It's a Bling Thing and cost a tiny $15- how perfect!

It's a Bling Thing has tons and tons of accessories from rings to iPhone covers all at affordable prices, and the staff was so friendly when I stopped in I'm itching to go back.

For my birthday my mom and I went vintage shopping in Chicago and I found my favorite new shop- the Ravenswood Antique Market. With everything from furniture to jewelry they feature different sellers with impeccably curated collections of pieces from 1920-1970.

I was so excited to find this bakelite "Irene" pin in one of the jewelry cases, not only do I have a love of bakelite installed in my from my gram, but Irene was my great grandmothers name. Tall, stunning, and creative my great grandma was someone I really looked up to growing up- she had such an artistic hand and a great story to tell.

It's Black Friday! Can you believe it, this month is flying by so fast! Obviously this post is not from today, as I have been at work from 9pm yesterday until 6am this morning.

On my days off when it's really chilly I love wearing this sweater, it's cotton and ramie, like a real Irish sweater, from the Boston Traders brand. It's my dad's sweater, but I love it so much I went searching the internet to find where Boston Trader's is sold, sadly I discovered the brand is no longer in business but you can find a few of their pieces on eBay.

Oversized sweaters are really making a comeback, which makes me incredibly happy because they make a great casual look with the right accessories. The watch I'm wearing is from my favorite elmhurst shop, Kie and Kate Couture, which I stopped previously this week and she had it available in a gorgeous rose gold.

So, it's cold out, way to cold out to take pictures without a jacket unless your a crazy fashion blogger.

I love this outfit though, I opened the box with this odd chiffon over-thing at Kensie and was so confused on how to wear it I had to call my corporate office for instructions! After receiving pictures and a brief explanation I was up for the challenge and purchased it for myself, and now it's one of my favorite pieces.

You can wear this three different ways: with sleeves and the belt in the back, sleeveless, or bloused with the belt behind your neck. I just like how versatile it is, buying it gives you three new tops in your wardrobe with just one purchase.

It's a mustard, black, and red plaid, and the lining on the inside is completely shredded, but the fit and length are perfect and I got it for a great price.

Cue the wind machine! I took these pictures on my break at work in our back alley way on the windy-est day yet this fall, excellent choice on my behalf. However I loved how the grey and yellow of the pipes played off the colors in my outfit, especially my Crayola tights.

Want to hear a hilarious story? One shoppers adorable little son reached out to grab my leg while she was shopping, much to her embarrassment, because he was learning his colors. It was really adorable- although I should stop wearing colored tights all the time, this is the second time that has happened!

Make: A Taste of Fall

When fall hits it makes the midwest a really magical place, the trees are warm, everything has a honey tint, and there is a special buzz in the air. This time of year always makes me want to bake, especially with pumpkin, so when Pilar of PJ & Hubby posted this pumpkin chocolate chip cookie recipe I knew I had to make it for myself!

The only difference I made was instead of semi-sweet chocolate chips I used dark chocolate chips, but I was also thinking a combination of white and dark chips would be great for Halloween.

When Pilar made them they didn't spread out a lot so I was able to fit quite a few on the pan.

I'm eager to bake some more- what recipes do you suggest I try next?

I love the colors in this dress, it's perfect to wear with lots of different tights! I have to admit though, when I was at work and walking through the mall I was getting tons of odd looks. So I need to start this post with a confession, it's a high of 77 degrees today and this is what I'm wearing to work. I can't help it! I just love fall- sweaters, boots, scarves- I love my layers!

I wasn't kidding before when I said I will probably wear this sweater everyday, good thing I have it in three colors.

Aren't you jealous that I get to drive past this pretty bike path everyday on my way to Aurora? The forest is really alive right now with rich mustard, burgundy, and olive. How can you not love the midwest?

Fall colors inspire me to really play around with pieces I may not put together. These rich royal colors fit right into place with the rich greens of the trees, I feel like I repeat myself in every post but this time of year is my happiest time!

What's so wonderful about living in Illinois is that there are so many forests and little nature parks hidden everywhere. This is a bike path I pass near downtown Naperville, the light hits it just right, I've been wanting to take pictures here for a while.

The leaves are starting to change here and it creates such a sense of magic! It makes you want to drink chai lattes, listen to A Fine Frenzy, and make hearty stews. I love this time of year, it really makes you feel alive.

It's been a really nice fall here in Chicagoland- there are days cool enough to wear thick sweaters and boots, and ones warm enough to wear jeans and short sleeved pieces. Love it! I wanted to make this a transition outfit so I wrapped a summery scarf on top of a fall sweater, transition outfits are some of my favorites for sure.

Look at that beautiful face!! That baby is 6 year old Jersey one of the loving little animals available for adoption at the Naperville Humane Society, which I visited recently to drop off a check courtesy of my generous sponsors.

That little eager beaver is Reggie, a 5 year old yorkshire terrier, who was so sweet and clearly wanted to play! If you are looking for a pet to love in the area- please, please, please visit your local Humane Society! The volunteers there are so friendly and loving but these pets need forever homes, and if you can't offer them a home donate a check or see what items they need.

That sleepy girl above is Evita who is a shy stray that was found with her three babies and needs a family to love her.

That photogenic cat is Slinky who is up for adoption with her brother Nerf who were playing around in kittyland- they are such a sweet pair!

Boo is a royal looking 6 month old who was dropped off at the Humane Society because her owner had allergies- give her a loving place to play and roam!

All these animals are available for adoption at the Naperville Area Humane Society

Well it's the start of fall, my favorite season, and I'm sick! Bummer city, but I decided to take this time of rest to update you on my favorite things for this cozy time of year.

1. Lace Dress from Bella Caley, $132

Lace is the biggest trend this fall, it's lady like and girly- two of my favorite qualities! I would pair this dress with navy or maroon tights and a pair of edgy suede wedges to glam it up.

2. Ava straight leg by Citizens of Humanity from Twist Boutique, $176

I actually just bought these this past weekend, they are a classic straight leg that you can wear with flats or tuck into boots and this dark wash is ultra flattering.

3. Lafayette Cross Body Bag from Stella and Dot, $148

Happy October!!

It's my favorite month! I realized I'm a little late in posting my Santa Barbara pictures, so here is what I wore on the plane. And, why yes this is a sweater from the Missoni for Target collection, thank you for asking. My wonderful mother booked it over to Target the day it launched and got quite a great collection! Sweaters, tights, socks, all gorgeous and zig-zagged.

I'm in love with this outfit- it definitely won't be the last time I wear it. This maxi is so cozy but the detail of the sweater makes it less simple, because lets be honest I don't like to dress simply, haha!

The fog on the morning I took these pictures was so stunning- it's like I was meant to do a photo post that day! I really love the color scheme of this dress, of course purple is my favorite color but the cream and taupe just set it off nicely. Do you have a favorite color scheme? What is it?

To make you feel a little envious, I'm actually writing this post while on vacation in Santa Barbara- and it's stunning here!! Although by the time your reading this I'll probably be back, and we'll all be in the same boat by wishing we were on vacation. Oh well, the grass is always greener!

Make: Broccoli Pasta

I love pasta, I eat it a minimum of once a week (usually twice) but it doesn't always leave me full and can be loaded with tons of calories. Watching Hungry Girl on the Food Network I was inspired to try her simple swap for a filling, low cal, pasta dish through this recipe I just made a few swaps!

Start by pouring a 1/4 cup water in a skillet, then pour half the bag of broccoli slaw on top. Stir it around for about 6 to 7 minutes, just long enough for the broccoli to soften up.

Once the "pasta" softens up pour on some of your favorite pasta sauce- we all know my favorite is the Arrabiata from Rao's Homemade- and let the sauce warm up.

Pour the yummy dish into a bowl, sprinkle on some parmesan cheese and enjoy!!

I'm completely in awe of Kensie's Fall collection, and this dress is one of my favorite pieces because it's so versatile! I can wear it right now, or I can layer it with tights and a sweater for colder months, and the print is so sweet and girly!

Of course I'm wearing these shoes with it. They are my favorite shoes and I will probably wear them everyday for the rest of the year, I've just accepted that.

Apple Pie Bake Off

For Labor Day weekend Naperville hosts "The Last Fling" with rides, concerts, and events, and it's always a good time. A few years ago my sister and I entered the fling's Apple Pie Bake Off with a recipe she created, but sadly we didn't win. This year I decided to try again with the same recipe and had such a great time- and a great turn out!

The look of the pie and decorations were a fourth of the score- so I had to make it look good!

That's my mom and I showing off my winnings- we were in first place for best filling and second for best overall pie, so exciting!

Make: Magic Layer Bars

Growing up my sister always made these Magic Layer bars, and they are a great staple to have in your recipe folder because you can change out the ingredients so easily! The original recipe is from Eagle Brand, which you can read here, but I changed it up a bit!

Ingredients:

- 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs

- 1/2 cup melted butter

- 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk

- 1 cup dark chocolate chips

- 1 cup white chocolate chips

- 1/2 cups chopped almonds

- 1 cup coconut flakes

- Set the oven to 350' and grease a 13 X 9"

- Crush the graham crackers in a plastic bag to avoid any mess

- combine butter and graham crackers

- Evenly spread cracker crumbs in the pan

- pour sweetened condensed milk directly over cracker crumbs

- Layer on top chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, almonds, and coconut

- pop in the oven for 25 to 30 minutes

- Take them out of the oven and let them cool, then enjoy!

I like to keep them in the freezer once they've cooled down- they are much more delicious cold!

Chicago Blogger Meet 'N Greet

A few nights ago I had a really wonderful time at the Chicago Blogger Meet 'N Greet hosted by Lisa at Deliciously Vintage Chicago in Pilsen. The boutique is beautiful- with pink striped walls and a highly selective collection of vintage pieces.

The collection of sequin items had my name all over it, you know how I love my sparkles, and Deliciously Vintage lacks the over stuffed and smelly atmosphere that most vintage shops have. You can tell all their pieces have been carefully selected just for their shoppers.

I had a really great time chatting with all the other bloggers, and got to meet some wonderful people. The local chicago lifestyle bloggers are so down to earth and friendly- they were so welcoming! It was nice to meet bloggers outside of the strictly fashion segment of blogging.

Tabitha did an absolutely incredible job putting together the gift bags- from 1154 Lill totes to whimsical mugs it was a real topper to the night! And of course everyone loved their Kensie totes!

I love this hat! I've been lusting after big sun hats for a while now, but none have been quite right although they look effortlessly cool. Then today while shopping with my mom we stopped at J.Crew to shop their 40% off sale merchandise sale and I feel about this beauty at a mere $19.99! Excellent.

Wear: What to wear to a farm

A few posts ago I talked about going to Heritage Prairie Farm, and that morning when we decided to go I admit it took too long to decide what to wear. I decided to go for a comfortable bohemian kind of vibe, and threw on a tunic and leggings but finished it off with a long chunky necklace.

Believe it or not, this is actually my least favorite piece of jewelry I own but it was on sale at Ann Taylor for a price I couldn't walk away from.

Craft: Paper Quilt

Inspired by the colors in this outfit I decided to make a new piece of art for my bedroom, and came up with an idea for a paper quilt. Here is what you need:

-Paper: such as scrapbook paper, newspaper, magazine pages, anything goes

-Scissors

-Canvas or thick cardstock to adhere the circles onto

-Hot glue gun

-Mod podge: either matte or glossy, I prefer matte

Start by cutting circles of some of your favorite printed and colored papers

Once you get a wide variety of colors and prints lay them out on the canvas or cardstock to get an idea of how you want to attach them, I stacked them so they would look like a quilt but you could lay them like fish scales too.

Then get glue crazy!

Your finished piece will look something like this:

Then paint on the mod podge, this will protect your finished piece.

Ta-dah! Now I won't lie, it took me all day to cut out those circles as well as a few blisters on my hands but it's worth it!

Wear: Feeling the 50's

I LOVE THIS DRESS!! This is only the second time I've worn it, but when I saw it at the VFish showroom many months ago I knew I had to have it! It's the print that got me, but I love the vintage feel that the halter gives off as well. This is my second favorite piece that I have from Vfish, the first is their INCREDIBLE fleece lined leggings- you have to get a pair for yourself this winter.

Haven't heard of Vfish? They are a fantastic Chicago based company that's sold online and at boutiques across the nation, they're known for their dresses because they are made of the softest material you've ever felt and flatter every single body type.

Visit: Downers Grove

So today my mom and I went around running some errands, and took time to drive through the beautiful downtown of Downers Grove and look at some of the stunning houses. It's a really pretty neighborhood, the side streets are brick instead of boring black pavement, and the houses are so unique and beautiful.

The colors are all so beautiful, I love painted lady houses and the victorian style.

This house is my absolute FAVORITE!! Who wouldn't love a giant turquoise sphere on the top of their house- beautiful!

Wear: Circa 1984

This basic black dress came with a simple brown belt, I decided to jazz it up with this fabulous little find hidden in my mom's closet. Believe it or not she bought it at Talbots in 1984! Pure fantastic, when people compliment me on it I love telling them that it's from Talbots- the shock on their face fills me with pure joy.

I have to say the modest mouse in me feels this dress is a little short, so I always wear a longer slip under it- I know I'm a grandma but I'm really ok with it.

These shoes are an old Target find too, I love the slight wedge when I work- I need proper support!

Eat: Meson Sabika

I LOVE Meson Sabika! It's the perfect summer restaurant, the mix of tapas fits everyones taste buds while the outdoor sitting lets you enjoy a warm summer night. Ryan, my dad and I went to enjoy the evening and I knew exactly the dress I wanted to wear, this was actually my graduation dress from high school but it might be my favorite item in my wardrobe.

When you go you have to order the Queso de Cabra- it's the best!

The great part of sitting outside is the atmosphere, there is a beautiful tree that comes up in the middle that makes it shady and comfortable. You really have to go at least once this summer!

Wear: Isn't it charming

The weather has turned slightly chilly which I'm actually coping with quite well, sometimes you need a break from dresses and spanx. I took today to wear an easy casual outfit, a soft safari shirt and my favorite jeans but I spiced it up with two of my favorite pieces of jewelry.

This necklace my gram and gramps gave me, they picked the charms out individually so they all mean something special to me. There is an airplane, a hotel key, and an english phone booth for all my travel as well as a camera and a purse for my favorite passions. I love how meaningful it is, and I get so many compliments every time I wear it.

My other new favorite piece is this bracelet my mom just gave me for graduation, it was actually a piece she stumbled upon but each of the charms pertain to me. There is a B, a graduation cap, and even a turtle that bobbles his little head- so fun!

Visit: Heritage Prairie Farm

On my day off the other day my mom and I decided to go to the Heritage Prairie Farm in La Fox, IL which we discovered through their CSA box. This certified naturally grown farm is really incredible, they grow a ton of fresh and local produce and are known primarily for their micro-greens. This do it all farm has a little Heritage Prairie Market, featured above, where you can buy their super delicious honey which they produce on site, as well as other unique natural products.

My favorite part of visiting the market though is seeing their sweet donkey and goat:

They also have these absolutely stunning peacocks, which my mom and I could have just watched all day- they are so beautiful and majestic!

You have to visit their website, the farm has lots of really great events and classes and you can even buy their honey online (which I suggest you do, and buy a lot of it because your family will go crazy for it).

I can't wait to go to their farm dinner tomorrow!

Wear: Skirting the issue

I’ve always been a dress person, but this summer for some reason I’m really feeling skirts. Being able to mix prints and colors is just making me feel brighter, while maintaining my girly tendencies. I love the print of this Kensie tank, it came in a top and two styles dresses and it really took me an embarrassing long about of time to decide which one I wanted.

I wore this outfit to work and ended up throwing a short sleeve red sweater over my outfit because air conditioning drives me crazy! I commented to one of my Kensie girls that I felt like a second grade teacher in Crayola colors, and she laughed saying she never met a second grade teacher that dressed that fun. Maybe I needed a nice alphabet pin or something...

Have you noticed a change in my pictures? I now have Photoshop!! As a graduation present to myself I updated all my software so you all can enjoy the benefits of my days off playing on my new fancy shmancy computer.

Product Review: Life Stinks

I love beauty products, and I'm a sucker for great packaging so when my Whole Foods loving family stumbled upon the Life Stinks brand while getting our groceries we had to give it a try. Created by the Duggan Sisters, the hilariously named deodorant and soap is trying to change the face of the deodorant industry in a natural way.

The all natural deodorant is a powder that you sprinkle on your hands then pat on your pits- and if your a real stinker you can rub their "stink stick" on first and then add the powder for some extra protection. I'm also really in love with their plain and tea tree soaps, normally all natural soaps leave your skin with a slick texture but not their Wash Up soap- it's awesome!

My whole family is in love with their products, and my super active yoga mum even said she noticed a difference right away and didn't smell at all after teaching two back to back classes. I love that you can sprinkle it in some of your closed toed shoes that get the funk when you don't wear socks!

Wear: Romping around

I’m so incredibly excited to be wearing a romper today! Let me start by saying that I’ve never been able to wear one pieces throughout my entire life- even as a baby my onesies wouldn’t stretch over my long torso. I tried this romper on at work as a joke actually, I didn’t think it would fit, but when I looked in the mirrorI I could have fainted in shock.

The difficult aspect for me was how I was going to make it girly and feminine, because it’s rare for me to wear all black. To mix it up i paired it with a pink scarf, turquoise necklace, and funky wedges I got at a great price {got to love working retail} and when my feet felt like they would fall off I switched to some orange flats.

I don’t know about you dear readers, but I’ve been having a severe case of the doldrums- most likely due to the weather, but this outfit is picking me up for sure! There isn’t a cloud in the sky, I would love to have a yummy dinner outside!

Wear: Summer Shine

Well, in my last post I was all excited about dress season and now the sun has hidden itself under clouds causing me to pull on a dreaded pair of pants. The morning is still lovely though, I get to hang out with the boo before he leaves for Georgia again, and I get to show off one of my new Kie&Kate necklaces.

I’m really feelings ruffles this summer, so I decided to wear them two different ways here- the ruffled hem of the cardi and the layered ruffles of the top.

I love this necklace; of course it’s a Kie&Kate necklace so while it’s a statement piece it isn’t heavy and really can be worn in so many ways!

I got these heels at Nordstrom during a super sale for dirt cheap, I haven’t really found a chance to wear them yet but I was obsessed with the color.

Summer time means dress season, and I couldn’t be happier! There isn’t much that I love more than a full skirted dress in a lovely print. I found this one at a lovely little boutique called Magpie in Jerome, Arizona which is a really small town but is filled with lots of fun treasures.

The print of this dress is what caught my eye, but I bought it in September of last year so this is actually the first time I’m wearing it- and I’m in love! The brand is Aryeh which I can’t seem to find anywhere but their dresses fit perfectly and despite the full skirt they are so light and breezy!

I work this to work, so while I would have loved to wear some fab turquoise heels I decided to opt for comfort with my wedges from Clarks. They have a reputation of not being so fashionable, but their Indigo collection fits my foot like a glove and they are actually real fun!

I’m so excited to blog about my chic mom, and I can’t believe I haven’t blogged about her already! Inspired by women like Ines de la Fressange, my mom always looks impeccably chic by wearing a few key pieces.

This is the outfit she wore to my graduation and for drinks at the Kit Kat lounge and dinner at Angelina’s after. Living in Paris she was influenced to have a smaller closet filled with classic, high quality pieces as well as fabulous hand bags and scarves. Items like cropped black pants and tailored blouses are a staple for my mom, that is when she isn’t in her yoga clothes (which I will say are also quite chic).

Eat: Chocolate Chip Cookies

I promised our Kensie girls that I would bake them my famous chocolate chip cookies, the only thing is they aren’t really mine to claim. I’ve been baked these cookies forever, we’ve had our Mrs. Fields cookie book since the 80’s and this cookie recipe has yet to be beaten.

Blue-Ribbon Chocolate Chip Cookies

2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup (packed) dark brown sugar- although I always use light brown
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 sticks (1 cup) salted butter
2 large eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips

Start by preheating the oven to 300 degrees, grease your cookie sheet. In a side bowl mix together the flour, soda, and salt with a wisk and set aside. Then in a large bowl mix your sugars, then add your butter- make sure its room temperature.

Then, add the two eggs- also room temp- and your vanilla extra until they have blended all together. Now add your flour mixture bit by bit so you don’t end up with flour all over your adorable Anthropologie apron.

Once that’s mixed fold in your chocolate chips, I like using dark chocolate for a zippier taste.

Finally transfer your cookies to the baking sheet and pop them into the oven for 20-24 minutes.

When they are done let them cool on the pan- it makes them chewier than transferring them to a wire rack.

This spring weather has me inspired to dress in light layers, so I was excited to pull out this Tulle jacket I got on sale at the end of the season last year. At school I really just like to be comfortable but that doesn't mean you can't wear some of your favorite pieces!

I've paired the jacket with a delicate knit sweater from Kensie- I love the mix of purple and army green and the texture just ads that little bit extra.

I love the simplicity of this necklace from Two Sisters Jewelry Boutique, which we carried at Twist, and all their pieces are so simple and easy. I have two necklaces and a pair of earrings from them, and I turn to them everytime I need a gift.

Most importantly though, I LOVE this J.Crew ballet flats more than anything because they are so easy and add a bit of bling to my favorite pieces.

And of course my most favorite thing- my poochie Audrey, who is loving this spring weather because she can loaf around outside without getting too hot!

Eat: Happy Cakes

The other day, when I had my day off, it was gorgeous in the morning putting me in a super cheery mood- then it started raining. Instead of grumping over my day out being cut off, I decided to head home and make these mini cupcakes I’ve wanted to try for a while and I’m so excited to share them all with you! I’ve been scouring Tablespoon.com and they recently have been posting tons of fun recipes of double rainbow desserts, so I decided to make my own sweet treats. Here is the recipe, you first make a simple white cake mix and then assemble:

Ingredients

1 cup white sugar

1/2 cup butter

2 eggs

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1 3/4 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 cup milk

Pre-heat the oven to 350 degrees, and then you can either use mini cupcake shapers or I used a greased silicone cupcake pan. Then, cream together your sugar and butter, then mix in your eggs and vanilla. Once those are together blend in the flour and baking powder, the batter will be a little dry so pour in your half cup of milk (depending on the weather sometimes I have to add a little more milk).

Once those are mixed, separate the batter into 8 bowls and dye each one a color of a rainbow (ROYGBIV) and you’ll have one left of plain batter that you can mix into a color if you over dye. I just did around 3 or 4 drops of each color, some recipes will tell you to use specific number of drops but just mix it in until it looks good.

Next comes the fun part, layer in the batter!! Just do a little drop of violet on the bottom, and then just keep adding the rest of the colors, just remember not to use too much because these mini pans aren’t that big. The layers don’t need to be perfect; once they bake they take on their own creation.

Now it’s time to put them in the oven! Pop them in for 12-16 minutes, but poke them with a tooth pick before you take them out, just to make sure.

This is what they look for in the end! Aren’t they so fun? That’s why I call them happy cakes.

Wear: Orange you glad

Today makes me so incredibly happy, it's my first day off since I started my grown up job because my classes got canceled, and I don't know what to do with myself! I wanted my outfit to reflect my happiness so my orange shorts from J.Crew were my go to piece.

Today I just bopped around downtown Naperville, I love going into all the downtown shops like M2, Twist Boutique, and the newly opened Joe Boutique. The face of downtown has really changed for the better- with Joe, Enchantments, and Kicks shoes all open it's really becoming a shopping destination.

I love the bracelets I'm wearing, my grandma has an envy inducing collection of bakelite, and she gave me these three bangles for my 21st birthday. While they are an unusual group of colors I find I can really wear them with everything, and I love that they aren't too big for my bird-like wrists.

Party: Kensie Grand Opening

This weekend at the Kensie outlet we hosted our grand opening party and celebrated with a sweet candy bar, DJ, and special markdowns on all our fabulous merchandise. We loved the buzz that the DJ created and all our wonderful customers had an aboslute blast.

Last night I was lucky enough to head over to the Medinah golf course to attend Kie&Kate Couture's Summer Boutique with my bestie Amanda. We had a fabulous night, not only did the rain finally stop but Kate always has the best collection of goodies.

It was still pretty chilly despite the weather so I unpacked my winter space bags and threw on my favorite Free People sweater dress, black Hue tights, and my absolute most favorite pair of shoes. These fab heels are from the Kensie outlet at the Chicago Premium Outlet and are only $19.99.

Kate never disappoints with her incredible collection of jewelry, handbags and clothing and the following are pictures of some of my favorite pieces from last night.

This cross body hand bag was so different and such a great size, plus I love a cream purse in the summer.

Here is Amanda showing off one of Kate's awesome rings, all her stretchy rings are only $20 and make such a statement.

Amanda and I ended up both leaving with quiet a fabulous bundle of rings, bracelets, necklaces, scarves and tops! We also had a great time meeting Andrea of Blonde Beadhead, who is Kate's marketing assistant, and was wearing one of Kate's fab rompers and looked stellar.

For the past year or so, I’ve had a pretty serious love affair with Rao's Homemade Arrabiatta and have enjoyed this delicious sauce at least once a week with every shape of pasta possible. Recently though, I discovered a new way to incorporate this even more frequently into my carbo-loaded diet by making a carb-less alternative to pizza. I’ll admit that I actually hate cooked mushrooms and could write and entire post about the unpleasing texture they offer, but when I tried Portobello Pizza I fell absolutely in love.

This recipe is super easy, and for a shopgirl who gets home from work needing to eat in 20 minutes or less it’s a life saver. Start by setting your oven to 400 degrees, lining a cookie sheet with tin foil, and pouring yourself a glass of Skinny Girl Margarita.

Next, pop the stem of the Portobello mushroom off and then give the cap a good cleaning and scrubbing to get off any dirty. Now cut a few super shallow lines on the top, to help water escape while it cooks, and place it upside down on the cookie sheet.

Now is the fun part- filling the inside of the mushroom as if you are making your own pizza. I like to start by putting a heaping teaspoon of Rao’s Homemade Arrabiat sauce in, then layering some spinach leaves inside. I’ve also used peppers, olives, other mushrooms- whatever pizza toppings you usually get. Simply sprinkle your favorite shredded cheese on top, I’m using mozzarella, and then pop it in the oven for around 12 to 15 minutes depending on how many ingredients you’ve put in.

While the mushroom cooks you can put a bit of water on to boil and make some pasta to serve with it, and feel free to use whatever pasta you like. The best part about this recipe is that you can really make it to taste since it’s so simple, and if you’re cooking for a large group everyone can pitch in and make their own “pizza” (I like this method as you get the credit, while they do the work.) Voila! Super simple.

While I’ve been busy in my second to last quarter of school and starting my job hunt, I’ve fallen madly and deeply in love with a new beauty product. Chicagoans know how cold this winter has been, and the wicked wind can seriously chap your skin. Desperately searching for relief I make Everest like trek to my local drug store (ok, so it’s two blocks away…) and discovered Burt’s Bees Beeswax Moisturizing Night Crème! Directions state to dab it on your face before you go to bed, and in the morning my ultra dry skin was healed! Inspired I decided to make the most of this magic balm, and slathered it on my chapped knuckles and splitting cuticles- and by morning you would have never known how dry my hands were.

All women who live in cold climates, or who simply have dry skin, need to keep this little jar by their night stand. Use it every night and those terrible signs of winter will be gone, if only it could bring spring in a little sooner as well…

10 Days Before Christmas

Oh. My. Gosh. 10 days til Christmas, yes, 10 days! Now take a deep breath, don't panic about the last gifts you need to purchase, the decorating that needs to be done, or the cookies that need to be baked (or store bought), I'm here to help!

When it comes to gifts you actually should be glad you waited, these next 10 days stores are worried that they over bought this holiday season and will be offering big mark downs. Take down town Naperville, the local stores host "Last Minute Madness" the Thursday and Friday before Christmas and offer a wide variety of discounts and gifts with purchase.

Worried about decking your halls for your holiday party? Relax, and keep it simple. Instead of extravagent center pieces on your table put a bowl filled with ribbon and ornaments or pieces of greens and those cute little clementines. When the kids are out of school and getting into everything, have them make some ornaments. Cover your table with news paper and give them paints, card stock, ribbons and old magazines and you'll end up with sweet, meaningful ornaments to hang off your tree.

Holiday Inspiration {Anthropologie}

This quarter in school I’ve interned at Anthropologie’s Bock 37 location in their visual display department. As my internship comes to a close and I get ready for my class presentation I’ve been looking over the images of the work I helped with and can’t get over how visually inspirational the company is. I’ve found that now I’ll never throw anything away because you can make art out of anything. The pictures below are of the fall windows we just took down which were made out of pizza circles, unbelievable! They were all folded and painted by my fabulous supervisor and the other intern, and the hand crafted work makes it really special.

The next pictures are from my favorite display, when you walk into the store you are greeted with these earthy-meet-modern tree stumps which were made out of chicken wire and cardboard. They come up with the most creative uses for everyday items that I want to craft when I get home from work!

Finally, these last photos are of the candles I melted to look “Phantom-of-the-Opera-like” and are a great way to decorate for the holidays. To do this at home stick some cheap candle sticks in holders or a vase of sand to keep them in place and light them all. While they are burning take one candle and hold it over each candle one by one, this will melt both candles and create dramatic wax drippings.

Product Review: Tresemme Dry Shampoo

Unless you have really short or baby fine hair, there is no reason to wash your hair every day. A few days after blow drying though my hair gets so flat so I’m absolutely in love with- and very picky about- dry shampoo. I’m passionate about Ojon dry shampoo, it smells and works fabulously but what girl can afford that on a monthly basis? So for a more affordable option I tried the first introduction of Tresemme’s hair refreshers- the waterless foam shampoo and hated it! I just made my hair damp and lifeless even if I blew it dry, so today I picked up their dry shampoo spray at Target. My bangs could use a little life so I just spritzed them, rubbed it in, and boom! Voluminous, fabulous, full of life hair! I love it! I would strongly recommend any girl to pick up this affordable option- keep it in your bathroom, throw it in your gym bag and you’re set!

Trend: Mad for Plaid

Here's the thing- I like plaid, really I do, but it needs to be made girly and fun for this fall because I'm so done with men's wear inspired fashion. Last winter we saw the plaid trend with men's plaid shirts under cardigans, but this fall and winter it's now flirty. This fun top is from Modcloth and enhances your shape with elastic smocking around the waist to huge your curves. Personally, I wouldn't button it all the way up to the neck as pictured here and I would wear it with Joe's Jeans skinny visionaire super stretchy fit pant. Pair this look with some vintage inspired boots or flats from Mod Cloth and your hair in loose feminine curls.
